Culture

After passing through the centuries with a many-faced historical development, chequered with rises and falls, Sozopol and the settlements of the Sozopol municipality have reached our days as possessors of a rich and unique cultural and historical heritage.

With regard to its type, its historical period and its localization, the cultural and historical heritage is consecutively referred to as two separate zones - on the one hand, that on the coastal strip with a main centre the town of Sozopol, and on the other hand, that on the territory of the settlements situated in the interior.

A main centre and a repository of a rich cultural and historical heritage in the zone of the coastal territory of the Sozopol municipality is Sozopol itself. Its location upon the picturesque peninsula and its town structure, created as a result of centuries of layering and the remarkable continuity in its development, makes it an unique museum on a world scale that shows the development of the most remarkable human civilizations.

The separate objects of this original cultural reservation have reached our days in various degrees of preservation and possibility for display. A special significance among them have the antique and medieval Christian complex, the southeast sector of the fortified town walls, the architectural reservation, including over 1 180 houses from the National Revival era, and also many others historical and memorial monuments of local and national importance.

The antique and medieval Christian complex is situated in the central part of Sozopol. This location determines its priority when archaeological research is carried out. The results of the research up to now not only have a local importance, but are a serious contribution to the clarifying of the all-round picture of the urban development of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast in antiquity and the Middle Ages, they are a precious cultural and historical heritage, which has to be preserved and displayed in a suitable way. The uncovered medieval church, which is comparatively well-preserved, affords the application of various solutions for the optimal restoration of the burial equipment and the interior decoration. The display of the antique monuments in the middle of the church creates the unique opportunity for showing of a full cross-section of the cultural and historical layers in Sozopol.

The fortification system, which girded the town through almost all stages of its development, was for many centuries the boundary of its territory. The walls and the turrets rise directly from the high and steep rocky shore and participate in the shaping of the characteristic silhouette in the direction of the sea. The entrance gate was situated sideward for fortification reasons and was in the street leading to the present-day breakwater - in the lowest part of the connection between the town and the sea.

All objects representing cultural monuments need maintenance and restoration because they are exposed to erosion by the aggressive sea air. As a result of the new housing construction on the town of Sozopol's territory, especially in the Old Town, there is a constant necessity for rescue archaeological excavations of the discovered objects of historical value, for conservation, restoration and adaptation to the town surroundings. The integration into the urban surroundings of the cultural and architectural monuments, and also of the natural landmarks has an exclusive importance for the municipality's development.

The numerous fortresses and fortifications, built in the interior of the municipality's territory, are connected with the Thracians' defence system and their large cult complexes. Remains of fortified walls from the late antiquity exist around the village of Rossen and in the Bakarlaka area, there is a Thracian fortress in the Ala Tepe area, and a Thracian-Roman fortress in the village of Varshilo, a late-antiquity and medieval fortress in the village of Novo Panicharevo. Valuable historical evidence are also the small stronghold from the Hellenistic Age in the village of Vesselie, the medieval fortress Kaleto in the village of Kroushevets, the medieval fortress in the village of Zidarovo, and also numerous remains of fortresses close to the coastal strip and upon it, and also those on the Atia Cape, in the Boujaka area southwards of Sozopol, on the Chervenka Cape, on the Akra (Sveti Nikola) Cape, etc.

Necropolises were found in the village of Vesselie, (a mound necropolis from the Hellenistic Age), in the Lobodovo Kale area along the saddle to the east of the fortress, 1 km to the north of the fortress, and on the Atia Cape (a flat antique mound necropolis).

Pre-historical tombs (dolmens) exist in the village of Rossen - two of them, southwards of the village, by the Vyatarnitsite area, in the Sadakovo (Lovjiisko) Kladenche area, 2 km southwards of the village and 2.5 km southwestwards of the Bakarlaka area.

There is also a rich heritage of cult buildings - churches, monasteries, chapels: the "Sveti Georgi" Church (1867), the church on the Atia Cape, the "Sveti Ilia" church in the village of Inje Voivoda, the "Sveta Bogoroditsa" church in the village of Varshilo, the "Sveta Troitsa" church from c.19 in the village of Izvor, the "Sveti Atanas" church in the village of Kroushevets, the "Sveti Georgi" church in the village of Zidarovo, the small monastery in the village of Izvor, the ruins of a church southwestwards of the village of Rossen, etc.

There are also 107 preserved houses - architectural monuments: in the village of Zidarovo - 8 houses , in the village of Kroushevets - 5 houses , in the village of Inje Voivoda - 62 houses , in the village of Vesselie - 9 houses , in the village of Varshilo - 23 houses .

There exist on the Sveti Ivan and Sveti Peter isles the remains of the "Sveti Yoan Predtecha" monastery with the "Sveti Yoan Predtecha" church for a main temple, destroyed in c.4 and c.5, an ancient Greek temple of Apollo, an antique lighthouse, antique furnaces for iron production and a Russian military burial ground.

For the preservation of the unique cultural heritage on land and under water, for the opportunity to show it to the world, an enormous amount of work, substantial investments and a reasonable policy are necessary.
